Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) is a beautiful, multi-season shrub or small tree that adds year-round interest to any landscape. In early spring, it bursts into clusters of bright yellow flowers before its leaves emerge, providing an important nectar source for pollinators.
As the seasons change, its glossy green foliage transforms into stunning shades of red and purple in the fall. By late summer, the tree produces vibrant red, cherry-like fruits that are not only eye-catching but also edible.
These tart fruits are commonly used to make jams, jellies, and syrups, or processed into juices, fruit wines, and liqueurs. They can also be dried for snacking, pickled for a tangy treat, or used in sauces much like cranberries.
Known for its resilience, Cornus mas thrives in a variety of soil conditions, tolerates cold and drought, and requires little maintenance. It’s an excellent choice for gardens, hedgerows, and naturalized plantings.
Whether planted for its ornamental beauty or its flavorful fruit, Cornelian Cherry is a hardy and versatile addition to any landscape.
